If you were lucky enough to have a little bit of pocket money and a Baker’s Delight on your route home, a finger bun with 100s & 1000s or thick pink icing was a guaranteed good time.
School's out! These are the 10 snacks every ’90s kid ate after school
You’ve got your housekey on a fluffy chain. You’ve just finished netball practice. You’ve got the house to yourself and a limited repertoire of dishes you’re allowed to cook without a grown-up. These are the after-school snacks that every ’90s kid lived on.
Arrowroots with butter
We’re not sure who thought of this first but they deserve an award. The simple combination of an Arrowroot biscuit with a thick smear of butter (who are we kidding, it was the ’90s, we were eating margarine) is one for the history books.
Vita-Weats with Vegemite
Usually a bottom-of-the-barrel snack because all the good crackers were gone, Vitaweets with butter and Vegemite were a staple of after-school snacks. Mainly because you got to squeeze the little worms through the holes which is still fun now. Admit it, you do it every time.
Cheese and bacon rolls
If your big brother hadn’t gotten to them first and devoured them like a pubescent bottomless pit, a cheese and bacon roll from the bakery section was top-tier snacking. We don’t want them hot and crispy. We want them cold, soft, and straight out of the bag.
Corn Thins
Who is that sophisticated 10-year-old, with their Corn Thins and cream cheese? It’s you! Everyone felt just a little bit fancy when they got to bust out this excellent after-school snack, especially if you had a friend over to play.
Popcorn
There was a reason our parents only bought microwave popcorn once in a blue moon in the 1990s. That four-pack they picked up on Monday would be lucky to last until Tuesday night and now you’ve ruined it for everyone. Worth it.
Pizza toast
A little bit of effort went a long way for this snack. Sure, it may have just been a piece of white bread with tomato sauce and a Kraft single, but when it’s the only thing you’re allowed to “cook” by yourself, pizza toast was legendary.
Lamingtons
A sweet afternoon treat, a packet of lamingtons sitting open on the kitchen bench gave us such a thrill. You pretend to grab just two while walking away with about three stuffed into your mouth as you dodge your siblings.
Milo
Cheds
So dry. So moreish. Cheds were (and still are) the after-school snack that dreams are made of. A little plate full of crackers, a glass of watered-down orange cordial and Danger Mouse on the TV in the good room, heaven. Honestly, take us back.
Finger buns
If you were lucky enough to have a little bit of pocket money and a Baker’s Delight on your route home, a finger bun with 100s & 1000s or thick pink icing was a guaranteed good time.
