You gotta feel a bit bad for the microwave. Forty years ago, it was the absolute pinnacle of the modern Australian kitchen. Everyone owned one, and if they didn’t, they wanted to. But over the years, the microwave’s place in our collective culinary clan has gone from stellar golden child to slightly embarrassing uncle. You know the one – still calls you ‘Poppet’ and always asks Uber drivers where they’re from. Still, while it might not have all the flash and glamour of an air fryer, for those who own a microwave, we know they can be indispensable. They can defrost meats, soften butter for a cake, steam vegies or heat up your lunch, all in a flash. But while microwaves are convenient and may seem like the perfect solution to any quick-cook conundrum, they can also become tinderboxes if you put the wrong thing in them.
